North End Hockey Program (NEHP)
The North End Hockey Program (NEHP) was created to meet the demand of children/youth residing in the North End of Winnipeg that had a desire to play hockey. In order to achieve this goal, the program had to seek out resources and support to address the barriers many north-end children and their families face. For these children/youth to enjoy the sport, the sense of community, sportsmanship and camaraderie the game of hockey can bring to their lives the program needed to obtain the following resources:
Partnership development including securing the necessary funding and in-kind contributions to address costs associated with registration, equipment, transportation and training. This was possible through various proposal submissions, individual, corporate and foundation donations, fundraiser events and in-kind contributions.
Ndinawemaaganag Endaawaad (Ndinawe) took on the role of being the sponsoring organization whereby they received, managed and reported on all financial contributions for the program. They were also able to designate staff time towards management, coaching, use of vehicles and website development for the program. Each partner also donated staff time and assistance with transportation throughout the season.
NEHP set our goal to develop 5-teams for children/youth between 5-9 years of age that live in the north end of Winnipeg and without financial support, could not achieve their dream to play hockey. With this assistance of various community elementary schools, we were able to advertise the NEHP and encourage parents to register their children/youth. Additionally, throughout the summer, two Aboriginal Youth Staff from the Aboriginal Youth Leadership Project run by the Centre of Excellence for Youth Engagement continued the registration process that resulted in registering over 80-children by August 2010.
- Funds to pay for registration, ice time, jerseys and skill development.
- Transportation to and from games, practices and tournaments.
- Equipment required to play hockey and including supplies such as water bottles, hockey tape, etc..
- Training support for coaches, managers and volunteers.
